About Dr. Maddy Perry

I was not one of those people who grew up around chiropractic. It was a very foreign concept to me for most of my life. I didn’t really know anyone that went to a chiropractor so I knew nothing about it. All of that changed my senior year of high school.

I’ve been an athlete all my life. I started playing soccer at the age of 4, taking dance classes, played softball every summer, basketball clinics, swimming lessons, you name it, I played it. I was lucky enough to be a 3 season varsity athlete at a school which had a very good pedigree of winning championships. My plans were to continue to be a student athlete through my college years but all that came to a screeching halt one rainy evening.

I was in a minor car accident, rear ended at a stop light. No one was seriously hurt, no ambulance called, just the standard soreness, some mild whiplash after a jarring incident. I thought I was fine until I went to practice a few days after and I started to experience shooting pain from my shoulder to my head, which lead to me experiencing my first migraine ever.

Even though I had never experienced a migraine, unfortunately my mother had a lot of experience with them. She had been experiencing crippling migraines since I was about 10 years old. I remember my mom being in bed for days and my dad saying “leave your mother alone, she had a migraine.”

I also remember being dragged to every specialist in the area. No one had any idea why my mom had such bad headaches. Every doctor gave her a different drugsaying, “let’s see if this one will work.”After years of numerous drug cocktails, hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars spent, nothing helped. The medical doctors’ last resort was to give my mother the strongest pain medication available, an injection.

Like with any drug, this drug had a laundry list of side effects. There were extremely specific instructions to follow when taking this injection. Within 20 minutes of feeling a migraine coming, my mother had to inject herself, but because this medication was so strong, she couldn’t be alone for the next 20 minutes. This drug had the ability to stop your heart and she needed to be watched to make sure she did not need to be revived. She took the drug once and decided this was not the answer and started looking outside the medical community for answers. This is when she made an appointment with the chiropractor.

My mother has been seeing a chiropractor for close to 20 years. She has never had a migraine now that has lasted more than an evening and these usually occur when she hasn’t gone to have her spine checked for a while.

The first person my mom called when I started getting migraines was the chiropractor. I was in there the next day and received my first adjustment. It was like nothing I had ever felt before but I loved it. It made me feel great.

I didn’t experience any migraines until my freshman year of college when I wasn’t getting adjusted on a regular basis. I was able to compete as a walk on athlete for the women’s track and field team. The only problem was, I was getting horrible migraines after practice, making it impossible to study.

My mom said I needed to go see a chiropractor again. My chiropractor referred me to a chiropractor that was close to school and I began to see him on a regular basis.

As long as I got adjusted, I didn’t get migraines. I also found that any injuries I sustained while training were healing a lot faster than my teammates. We were all seeing the same athletic trainers, getting the same treatments, eating the same foods, doing the same workouts, but I was able to come back quicker than others.

That’s when I realized what chiropractic was doing for me. I was not only out of pain, but:

  1. I was healing faster
  2. I was able to train harder
  3. I had better control of my body

I was constantly encouraging all my teammates to see a chiropractor and when a light bulb went off.

I knew what I was supposed to do with my life. I was going to be a chiropractor and help people get back their health and lead the best possible lives they could.
